Elon Musk introduced Grok, an AI chatbot inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And it has a playful attitude. He mentioned it is a rival to ChatGPT. And will be available to premium subscribers on his X platform after testing.

Musk also mentioned that Grok can see user posts on X. And often gives sarcastic responses. He shared an example where Grok humorously suggested steps to make cocaine but clarified it was a joke and discouraged illegal activities.

Grok is currently in early testing and not open to the general public. But it will eventually be offered to Premium+ subscribers on X. The term “Grok” means to understand deeply and intuitively. And it was used by science fiction writer Robert A Heinlein.

Musk’s new AI company, xAI, developed Grok, and it took influence from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, known for its humor and witty answers. The xAI team mentioned that a large language model called Grok-1 powers Grok.

They stated that Grok-1 has outperformed GPT-3.5 in some areas. Like solving middle-school math problems, but it’s not as advanced as the most powerful ChatGPT model, GPT-4.

The xAI team mentioned that they have made Grok a prototype available to a limited number of users in the US. They plan to introduce “new capabilities and features” in the next few months. According to the Grok website, they offer initial access to X subscribers through an “early access program.”

Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, stepped away from the company in 2018 due to disagreements with the OpenAI team and other commitments. Musk had expressed concerns about the rapid development of AI. And supported a call for a six-month pause in powerful system development in March.

However, in July, Musk changed his perspective and formed xAI. Intending to develop AI systems with a responsible approach. Speaking at the AI safety summit at Bletchley Park recently, Musk reiterated his concerns about AI posing a threat to humanity.

He echoed the fears of some experts and tech executives who worry that AI systems could become so advanced that they operate beyond human control and make decisions that endanger humanity.

Musk also predicted that AI, which refers to computer systems performing tasks associated with intelligent beings, would eventually replace all human jobs. During a conversation with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, he stated, “There will come a point where no job is needed.”
