CD Projekt RED is currently working on six new projects. And three of them are related to The Witcher series. Along with a multiplayer Witcher spin-off and a modern redo of the first Witcher game, the company is developing a completely new mainline game announced last year as “Project Polaris.”

We don’t know much about the new Witcher game. Except that it marks the beginning of a trilogy and is using Unreal Engine 5. Thanks to a partnership with Epic Games, instead of CD Projekt RED’s REDengine. CDPR has been uncertain about whether Project Polaris and its two follow-ups will continue the original Witcher trilogy or introduce a completely new story. Although the promotional materials refer to the game as The Witcher 4, the final title won’t include a number.

Fans are eager to know if Geralt of Rivia. The tough but honorable monster hunter featured in CDPR’s first three Witcher RPGs, will make a comeback in The Witcher 4.

The Developer Speaks

In a recent interview with Lega Nerd (as translated by Insider Gaming), game director Sebastian Kalemb hinted that Geralt might indeed appear in the upcoming game. However, Kalemb didn’t specify whether Geralt would be the main character again or play a supporting role.

Kalemb mentioned that the goal is to make The Witcher 4 accessible for a new community of players. While still honoring the existing fanbase who followed Geralt’s adventures in the previous three games. There’s ongoing discussion about whether Geralt should return. Especially considering his apparent retirement from monster-slaying at the end of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Many suspect that The Witcher 4 and its sequels might introduce a new set of characters. Shifting the focus away from Geralt.

Sebastian Kalemb acknowledges that The Witcher 4 is still a few years away from release. So fans might have to wait a while for confirmation about Geralt’s return. Many questions remain about how Geralt would fit into the new storyline CDPR is embarking on.

However, Kalemb emphasizes that The Witcher 4 aims to find a balance between paying tribute to the previous games and opening a new chapter in CDPR’s renowned medieval RPG franchise. The game intends to maintain the essence of the series.
