Xbox’s Next Step: Surface Team to Lead. Handheld Gaming Ahead?
A recent report suggests that the team behind the Xbox Series X|S won’t be working on the next Xbox device. Nick Baker, also known as Shpeshal_Nick from the XboxEra Podcast, claims that Jason Ronald, who spearheaded the development of the Xbox Series X|S, won’t be in charge of the next Xbox project.
Instead, the Microsoft Surface team will take over. Baker mentioned, “I’ve also heard about the Surface team taking over. That’s why I was surprised when I heard Mag mention that Jason Ronald wouldn’t be leading the next Xbox because I heard the same thing.”

It’s unclear whether the upcoming device will be a traditional console or a handheld one. However, with the Surface team taking the lead, it’s possible that Microsoft’s next big release in the Xbox lineup could venture into the handheld gaming market.
According to reliable sources cited by Insider Gaming, the Surface team has been involved in Xbox design since the development of the Xbox One S. Microsoft is expected to unveil its immediate plans for the future of Xbox this week. Especially amidst rumors of first-party Xbox games being released on other platforms.
