Google Gemini AI is coming to Apple iPhones – Report Says

Apple is talking about putting Google’s Gemini AI engine in the iPhone. Bloomberg News said this on Monday, citing people who know about it. Apple has also talked to OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, and has thought about using its model.

Apple and Google are currently in talks for Apple to license Gemini to enhance some upcoming features on the iPhone’s software this year, as reported by Bloomberg. The Apple is developing new capabilities for its upcoming iPhone iOS 18 using its own AI models, but it is looking for a partner to provide generative AI features.

These features would include functions like creating images and writing essays based on basic prompts. The two companies have not yet decided on the terms or branding of an AI agreement, nor have they finalized how it would be implemented.

Bloomberg mentioned that it’s unlikely for any deal to be announced until June. It is the time when Apple usually holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Currently, Apple and Google have an agreement where Google is the default search engine on Apple’s Safari web browser.

Apple, Google, and OpenAI did not respond immediately to a Reuters request for comment during non-business hours.

Apple has been slower than rivals like Microsoft and Google in implementing generative AI. These AI gaints can create human-like responses to written prompts, into its products. Last month, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook mentioned that the company intends to reveal more about its plans to utilize generative AI later this year. Cook also noted that Apple is investing a significant amount in this area.
