Can PS5 Pro will run GTA 6 at 60fps – What Experts say?

Tech experts at Digital Foundry verified and added to the leaked PlayStation 5 Pro specs. They also predicted how GTA 6 will run on this unannounced console. This week, IGN also confirmed the leaked PS5 Pro specs, revealing the console’s power that Sony plans to release in late 2024.

The PS5 Pro CPU is similar to the standard PS5’s CPU but includes a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode’ that increases its speed by 10% to 3.85GHz. The GPU on the PS5 Pro allows for faster rendering and better quality ray tracing, with a power of 33.5 teraflops compared to the standard PS5’s 10.28 teraflops.

A direct comparison between the PS5 and PS5 Pro would show around 10.28 teraflops for the former and 16 to 17 teraflops for the latter. The upcoming release of GTA 6 in 2025 makes the PS5 Pro especially attractive. This release is anticipated to have a positive impact on the video game market.

Expert’s Opinion

According to Rich Leadbetter, the founder of Digital Foundry, who spoke in the latest DF Direct episode, GTA 6 will likely run at 30fps on the PS5 Pro. This assumption is based on the fact that if GTA 6 runs at 30fps on the standard PS5, it will likely do the same on the PS5 Pro. Historically, no GTA game has been launched with a 60fps option.

Leadbetter explains that the CPU’s performance is crucial for simulation in games like GTA 6. Since the PS5 Pro’s CPU only offers a 10% increase in performance over the standard PS5, it is unlikely to support a 60fps mode for GTA 6 unless there are significant programming changes. Therefore, if GTA 6 has a 60fps mode on the PS5, it would also have the same frame rate on the PS5 Pro.

Digital Foundry states that while the PS5 Pro’s CPU shows only a modest improvement, it significantly outperforms the standard PS5 in terms of rendering capabilities. According to their analysis, the PS5 Pro can enhance older PS5 games from 1080p to 4K using its upscaling/antialiasing technology called PSSR provided developers choose to implement this feature through a patch.

Additionally, Digital Foundry reports that the PS5 Pro will maintain the same 16GB of GDDR6 memory as the standard PS5 but will include an extra 1.2GB of system RAM specifically dedicated to developers.

Sony’s PlayStation5 Pro Launch

Analysts recently suggested that Sony is likely to launch the PlayStation5 Pro later in 2024. This aligns with Sony’s history of releasing upgraded versions of its consoles, such as the PS4 Pro, which debuted three years after the initial PS4 release in November 2016. If the PS5 Pro launches this November, it will mark four years since the PS5’s launch in November 2020.

Despite revising its sales forecast for the current financial year from 25 million to 21 million consoles sold, Sony experienced a year-on-year increase in PS5 sales during the holiday 2023 quarter, rising from 7.1 million to 8.2 million units sold.

Sony has also announced that it will not release major existing PlayStation franchise games, including sequels in franchises like God of War and Spider-Man, before April 2025. Additionally, Sony recently announced layoffs affecting over 900 staff at its gaming business, including the closure of its London studio.
